A Guide for Student and Parent Communications with Colleges

The purpose of the call? To inform the counselor that repeated calls from a mother were seriously jeopardizing her son’s application. College admissions representatives are passionate about helping students, and are patient†¦ except when that patience is tested by parents who seem more invested in the admissions process than their students. This pushing of the communication boundary can put a student at a serious disadvantage. There are definite dos and donts for talking to college admissions and financial aid officers. In the majority of instances where contacting a college is necessary, it should almost always be the student communicating in a polite and courteous manner. Consider this fair warning: â€Å"When a colleague puts down the phone and exclaims, That person was rude! I would immediately ask which applicant or prospective student was involved. Once the applicant or prospect is identified, a note gets promptly placed in the students file. Duly noted!†Ã¢â‚¬â€ Josà © Romà ¡n, Former Assistant Director of Admissions, Yale University. What are the boundaries for communicating with colleges? Here are some guidelines for students and parents: DO BE THIS STUDENT WHEN TALKING WITH COLLEGES Open your emails from colleges! Some colleges use this as â€Å"tracking† of interest or a sign of demonstrated interest; if you don’t open their email, or open it weeks later, you look disinterested. Feel free to respond with a brief â€Å"thank you for the information.† Do you have an opportunity to do a college admissions interview? DO IT. Follow up with a thank-you note. Create a portal account and frequently check the submission/completion status of your materials. Respond in a timely manner (read: immediately) to requests for missing or additional information. Does your portal show a missing document? Check for errors/omissions on your end first, or check with your school counselor, before making contact with the college. Be courteous and polite in every interaction -especially with the person answering the phone. Write thank-you notes to your counselor and recommendation writers. DON’T BE THAT STUDENT Don’t call with a question that’s easily answered with diligence on your part. Example: â€Å"When can I expect an admissions decision?† They are either going to post a definitive decision date, or not. If they don’t post one, it’s because they aren’t committing to a decision date for a variety of reasons, and that is their prerogative. Calling them likely won’t clarify it. Take a deep breath, and be patient. Call an admissions officer only if you cannot locate your answer anywhere on the website, in your portal, or in your emails/letters from the school. This is a waste of everyone’s time. Calling â€Å"just because† does not make you look interested, it makes you look incompetent. DO BE THIS PARENT WHEN TALKING WITH COLLEGES Let your student take the lead on necessary communications with colleges and school counselors. Talk with your student beforehand, write down insightful questions and talking points, but only your student should be picking up the phone or sending an email. Check your student’s portal for the financial aid status of your submission, and respond in a timely manner to any requests for additional information. (NOTE: this is very common, so don’t be alarmed.) This is the realm of the parent in most cases. If a call to a Financial Aid office is needed, be prepared and do some research ahead of time. Colleges are very good at communicating exactly what they need. If you have extenuating circumstances (loss of job, sudden illness affecting income, etc.), absolutely make contact. Stay positive and encouraging. It’s a very stressful time for students. DON’T BE THAT PARENT Don’t call an admissions officer. Ever. This is your student’s responsibility. Have a conversation with your student, write down your questions/concerns, and have your student call or email. Don’t encourage your student to call unless there is a very good reason, and it’s a question to which you can’t find the answer anywhere. Colleges are looking for mature, responsible students to join their communities not students who need their parents to step in and direct. Being a helicopter parent is not going to improve the chances for your student’s admission, and it could very likely hurt it. Letting your student take responsibility in the admissions process is a win-win situation. You are instilling confidence in your student that you trust their ability to handle their own affairs. In doing so, you allow a college admissions officer the opportunity to communicate with a confident, informed, responsible student. Incidentally, this is also great practice for what’s about to come: NO staff member of ANY department at ANY college will discuss ANYTHING with you without your student’s express permission. (This is only a slight exaggeration.)

The United States of America has always been referred to as the land of the free. The United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights were put in place to ensure that the citizen’s basic rights were not violated. Even with these documents in place, certain rights have often been the center of heavy debate. The fourth amendment which protects against unreasonable searches and seizures, or the first amendment which protects free speech, or the fifth amendment which protects you from self incrimination. Of all these rights that have been brought into question, the most recent is the second amendment which secures the right for the people to keep and bear arms. One law that was established at this time was the National Firearms Act of 1934. The National firearms Act stated that any weapon considered a machine gun or short barreled rifle, including sawed off shotguns, would have a tax of $200 imposed on the transfer of that weapon. During this period Homer Cummings, the attorney general for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, was a very anti second amendment politician. He began developing a plan to create a national registry, controlled by the central government, to keep track of guns and their owners. Unfortunately for Cummings, his plans quickly became unpopular when World War II started. People quickly realized the importance of having a firearm handy when the need arises. Gun control advocates seized their push for gun control measures until a further time. It wasn t until the 1960’s when gun control was brought back up, this time stronger than ever before. They used the deaths of Martin Luther King Jr., Robert Kennedy, and JFK to fuel their campaign against guns. This was the perfect time to go after the second amendment as modern liberalism had become the dominant political view in the country. It didn’t help that at this time the Vietnam war was taking place. This added to the dislike of guns as many people were against the war and violence.

Television since its invention has come to be an influential part of the everyday life. The question that is presented now is if television is in fact a positive or negative factor in the lives of those who watch it. One side of the debate in favor in the usage of television says that television is something that can be used to educate and improve lives. Cyber A had dual scalar processors. A compare move unit was a special unit that compared fields of data and then moved them as dictated by the instruction. The instruction was a 60 bit instruction for a simple compare or move instruction but if it was a compare move collates it could be a 120 bit instruction. And you had to know what every bit in that instruction did. These instructions could be extremely difficult to diagnose when something went wrong. Because you had to know which one of the instructions was failing and you hoped for the easiest one to be failing instruction. In the test software output you had to determine whether you were dropping or picking a bit. Dropping a bit would be if you set the bit to a one and read back a zero. Picking a bit would be no matter what you set the bit to you would always read back a one. So you had to run the test with many different data patterns to make sure of what the problem was and which module was the failing module. Because this was a main frame computer it had many modules that were the same kind so what you would do is swap modules between locations and run the test again to see if you moved the problem and where it moved to. And that would be the failing module. Once I got the problem to stabilize and failing consistently and I traced it down in nothing flat. I worked on many problems over the years at Control Data some of them resulted in changes to the equipment. I went to various classes on equipment that worked faster and processed more data in less time. At the time the space race was on and the need for more computing power was very important. I worked on the same models of computers that got man to the moon and back safely. I wrote many reports as to why certain problems were occurring, and there was always a trip report to be filled. I enjoyed working for Control Data Corporation because the job presented a new challenge every day and no two days were the same. One day you could be sitting at your desk looking for something to do and the next you could be getting on an airplane and flying to a distant city to solve a major problem. Mercutio and Benvolio are different because Mercutio is a wild person that likes to pick fights even though they arent his battles. You can see Benvolio is a peace-keeping person especially when he states I do but keep the peace: put up thy sword (Scene One). He says this mainly because he doesnt want anyone to get hurt or get in trouble with the law. Although Mercutio and Benvolio are really close to being antithesis of one another, they are also similar because they are both incredibly loyal and faithful to Romeo. Though they are an oddly matched pair, they somehow combine to add their own unique flavors to Romeo and Juliet. Benvolio and Mercutio are two symbolic characters.
